I’ve put a lot of time in the gym for the past 3 seasons for this moment… Fall.  Okay, it’s not officially fall yet, but come on, who really thinks of September as a summer month?  College football begins tonight, and with it, my inevitable weight gain.  Weekends filled with cheese dips, hot wings, barbecue, and sweets will be occurring regularly for the next 3 months.  When my friends and I get together for gameday, we start out with a breakfast of pigs in a blanket and maybe a slice of pizza if we can find some from Friday night.  It only gets worse from there.  What is your essential gameday grub?  Do you make a special dip?

Credit cards

After I left college, I walked away with a whole lot more than a degree.  A maxed out credit card and student loans were knocking on my door.  Back then, taking hold of my finances seemed like a troubling task.  A friend of mine had suggested a site that helped him out when he had gotten into a little financial trouble; Mint.com.  The site has grown a bit since I used it to help make my way out of credit card debt and plan out my student loan payments.  Now I have a complete financial goal and easy to use budget that syncs with all of my accounts.  Each and every expense is accounted for from checks to card swipes.
It’s a great place to find online banking that will offer you much better interest rates than any physical bank in Kansas City.  Check out the completely safe and free website.

3 Musts to Keep In Your Car

CALIFORNIA ROAD TRIP 2009

For many people, summertime means at least one road trip.  That, plus the other day-to-day road hazards can always cause the unexpected to happen while driving.  When I first started driving, there were a few essentials that my dad gave me to always keep in my car and they have come in handy more than I wish I had to use them.  Here are three things that he gave to me to always keep in my car:

  1. Jumper Cables:  My first car was really old and it had gone through the abuse of my brothers before me.  The alarm that was used to let me know if I left my lights on was KIA and whenever I would turn my lights on for my morning commute to school, I would always forget to turn them off after parking… This could have been because I was always running late.  Either way, having these cables helped me out big time.  They also helped me land a date when I helped out a girl after class (thanks Dad.)
  2. Portable Air Compressor:  This little gadget came in handy a lot with my last car.  When I moved back to the city, my low profile tires and the pot holes did some major damage to my wheels.  I blew about 10 tires in a year, so my spare was in use quite a bit.  My tires also managed to find nails in the road, so having the portable air compressor allowed me to pump the tires up with the slow leaks so that I could make it to the tire shop.
  3. Cell Phone Charger:  I got my first cellphone when I started to drive and my parents would kill me if I didn’t have my phone charged before going anywhere.  Having a fully charged cell also got me out of a ticket when I was pulled over for speeding when I was 16.  The officer just asked me to call my dad so he could talk to him and then he let me go with a warning.

Giving Back to Kansas City

Going through the day to day stresses and conflicts can often cause us to lose sight of how blessed we truly are.  Whether you are barely making care payments, you still have a car.  If you think you’re stuck in a dead-end job, you still have a job.   Whatever is bumming you out, it’s important to take a step back, and look at all you really have.  Giving back to our community in Kansas City is a great way for the residents of Timberlane Village to share their lives and abilities with those who are less fortunate.

Here are a few ways you can help around town…  If you know of other opportunities, please leave a comment with contact information about the charity.

  • Restore KC – A Habitat for Humanity project.
  • Ronald McDonald House Kansas City – Ronald McDonald House Charities provide comfort for families who must travel to KC for their child’s medical care.  This is a great way to keep families together during stressful times.
  • Cars for Homes – When my transmission blew in my first car, I had no idea that somebody would want that hunk of junk.  Little did I realize that plenty of families were pining for a car to go get groceries or take their kids to football practice after school.  It ended up that the transmission was no big deal and I received a tax deductible from it as well.
  • City Union Mission – Various drives, benefits, and missions that give back to Kansas City.  “Since 1924, CUMission has provided warm beds, nutritious food, and a place of safety for thousands of pverty stricken and homeless men, women, and children.”
